last night I told the neighbor I homeschool. She asked Why. I gave one of the 157 standard answers. she asked again. I gave another. she asked again. and again. and asked why we took him out of school. and then asked if we never "let" him go to school. and started talking about our mutual friends who homeschool, and how odd it was that she kept HSing after they moved to a small town, since the schools there are less violent. she just could not get that there were educational reasons to keep your kids home. I stopped trying, and came home. I AM SO SICK OF JUSTIFYING OUR EDUCATIONAL CHOICES. WHY DO I NEED DETAILED REASONS FOR HOW I EDUCATE MY CHILDREN? I try so hard whenever this happens to not focus on how broken I think public schools are, because really I'm not trying to attack anyone else's choices, but I always want to turn it around with grilling people why they would choose to send their kids to government schools. And really, I do understand their are many many reasons people choose institutionalised schooling, but I want to start pretending I don't understand, and going properly off about the problems I have with the institutional school system just so they can be on the defensive for a change. And this neighbor doesn't even have school aged kids, so she doesn't have the personal investment in believing in the school system, but WTF.
So this link, with a successful public school kid pointing out the broken system, maybe will help.

Your neighbor can ask you a couple of questions since you said the H and the S, but you get to choose the point when you say; "You know, let's talk about other things."
And in fact, it's up to you to do that.
I didn't homeschool mine because I figured I would be shit at it, and I got signs from hubby that he would not support me. My kids got a shit schooling, and I'm sorry for it.
